5 Ways to Save on an Electric Bill in the Living Room

If you’re like most American homeowners, your living room is where you spend the majority of your time indoors. You probably have a couch, a television, and numerous appliances to keep yourself and your family entertained in your leisure time.

While the fancy appliances might keep you entertained for hours, they might also be driving up your electric bill. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of five easy ways you can save on an electric bill by changing your living room habits:

  1. Unplug your appliances when not in use. Even when your appliances, like your television or video game console, are turned off, they can still draw energy from a power outlet. Make sure they are unplugged when not in use.
  2. Use natural lighting whenever possible. If it’s bright outside, open the curtains instead of turning the lights on.
  3. Replace your lights with fluorescent or LED bulbs. It’s an easy upgrade that won’t cost you much money upfront, but will save you a ton on your electric bill over time.
  4. Use your ceiling fan to circulate air. In the summertime, most homeowners know that turning on a ceiling fan can make the room feel cooler. But using a fan in winter can also help improve the internal climate by pushing warm air downward.
  5. Look for power saving settings on your appliances. Most newer televisions have a “power saver setting,” which will reduce backlighting and eliminate a few unnecessary features in order to reduce its electricity consumption to the absolute minimum.
