8 Habits to Eliminate to Save Money on Electricity

If you’re thinking about trying to save money on electricity, you might immediately think about upgrading your appliances or making major changes to your home. While major investments can equate to an equally major impact on your electricity bill, don’t underestimate the power of simple changes. Odds are, there are several daily habits you’ve developed that are building the charges on your electricity bill without you even noticing. Eliminating those habits can eventually add up to a significant savings on your electric bill.

Here are some of the most important habits to eliminate:

  1. Leaving your phone plugged in overnight. Your phone will continue to draw energy even after it’s fully charged.
  2. Keeping your refrigerator door open too long. You might be indecisive about what to eat, but leaving the refrigerator door open for more than a few seconds can drop its internal temperature and waste energy.
  3. Heating or cooling your house when you’re away. Adjust your settings before leaving, or use a remote app.
  4. Failing to unplug your large appliances when not in use. Even when turned off, your television and stereo can draw a significant amount of energy.
  5. Allowing your computer to remain on. It pays to shut down completely when you won’t be using your computer for an extended period of time.
  6. Lighting rooms that aren’t in use. Be sure to turn off all lights when exiting a room.
  7. Running your dishwasher, washer, or dryer inefficiently. Don’t run these appliances before they’re fully loaded, or with unnecessarily high or hot settings.
  8. Taking long, hot showers. It might be comfortable, but even cutting one minute off your shower time can save energy.
