RECs and You: A Recap

At Star Energy Partners, we go beyond simply supplying you with clean energy. We truly believe that green energy from renewable energy sources is the future of energy production. That’s why we now offer Green Energy Products that allow for the acquisition of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). These RECs support the renewable energy industry in Ohio and throughout the entire country.

Here’s how they work. For every kilowatt-hour of electricity you use, Star will match it with the purchase of an REC. Think of RECs as green energy “karma” that supports the ongoing investment in clean and renewable energy sources like wind, hydro, and solar power. This provides our customers a voice in terms of which type of electrical generation source they choose to support.

Our customers have the option to choose between two different types of Green Energy Products: national or local. These different products support different industries, and each has multiple options in terms of the support they provide.

National

This variety of green energy product allows customers to support wind-generated renewable energy across the country. There are multiple options within this plan that determine how much of your energy bill goes toward renewable energy sources.

Local

Star Energy Partners customers can also support the local Ohio renewable energy industry by purchasing RECs from Ohio-certified renewable energy resources. Unlike the national option, customers purchasing local RECs have the option to select any mixture of wind, solar, biomass, or hydropower.

Within both the National and Local REC plans, customers can customize even further, choosing just how much they want to contribute to green energy:

  • With the 100% offset option, Star Energy Partners matches 100% of the energy you use with RECs. This means that your entire energy bill will go toward supporting renewable energy.
  • With the 25% offset option, Star Energy purchases RECs worth one quarter of your energy bill.

Why is this so important? By purchasing RECs, Star Energy Partners and its customers are supporting the national and local renewable energy industries. These efforts reduce America’s reliance on fossil fuels and thereby reduce our carbon emissions and air pollution levels.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, participation in our Green Energy program promotes competition within the renewable energy industry. This support helps the industry to continue to grow and develop, which can create valuable jobs in our economy as the industry continues to expand.
