10 Tips for Saving Energy in Spring

Spring is upon us! With the changing seasons come different energy needs in our homes, as well as different strategies for saving energy. Below, we have gathered some useful energy saving tips that are especially helpful during the spring.

  • Open windows to create a cross-breeze that will naturally cool your home without requiring you to turn on your air conditioner. This is perfect for spring weather, as opposed to summer weather, because spring weather is generally mild instead of hot.
  • Use ceiling fans because they make your home feel several degrees cooler. Ceiling fans don’t actually make your home cooler, but they make your body feel cooler because of the wind chill effect. You can usually raise your thermostat roughly four degrees as a result, which will save you energy.
  • If you are looking to keep your home cooler, cook outside as much as possible. This will keep the heat created from the cooking process out of your home.
  • As with any season, having proper sealing on your house is important to help regulate temperatures. If you have a sliding glass door, check the track. If your door track is dirty, the seal won’t be created, and heat from the outside world will enter your home.
  • To save energy during the day, turn off your light fixtures and let natural light illuminate your home. This way, you don’t have to waste energy on lights during the day.
  • Use your bathroom fans periodically during the day to “suck out” the warm air in your home.
  • Invest in smart curtains or a programmable thermostat to save money in the long-term.
  • Be aware of increased amounts of pet fur and dander in your home, since some pets shed their fur during the spring. To that end, make sure to check the coils on the back of your refrigerator. If materials get in the areas between the coils, your appliance’s energy efficiency will suffer. Additionally, try replacing air filters to keep your allergies from going crazy.
