How to Establish Service When You Choose an Electricity Provider
If you’re looking to choose an electricity provider when you already have established service, your path forward is simple. When you switch electricity providers and you already have connected service, there is no need to go through a process of service termination and reconnection.
However, if you are moving to a new location where electricity is not available and you’re looking to choose an electricity provider, you’ll need to go through a few steps to ensure that your utility service is established. You must first connect to a local utility supplier before switching to an alternative provider.
If there is already a meter present at the location, contact your electricity provider at least one week before you need service to be established. This will allow the company to visit your location, perform any necessary inspections, and restore service by the time you need it.
If there is not already a meter present at the location, you’ll need to contact your electricity provider at least one month in advance. In this scenario, your electricity provider will need to install a meter from scratch and perform several inspections to ensure everything is up to code.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) requires that electric utility companies install service within 3 days of the date you specify, or within 10 days if there is construction required.
Once your electricity service is established, you’ll be able to choose an electricity provider based on your home or business’s needs. Use Star Energy Partners to see what electric utility suppliers are available in your area, and what rates and plans are available.
