Reducing Your Annual Electricity Prices
It’s safe to say that no matter what age you are, what your profession is, or what your financial situation looks, you always want to take advantage of any opportunities to save money. If you’re a homeowner or if you run your own business, some things that that regularly eats out of your wallet include what you have to pay in the form of monthly utilities, including electricity, water, gas, internet, phone, and cable to name a few. However, amongst the various utility bills you need to pay, there are a number of things you can do to lessen electricty prices on a monthly basis.
Ways To Reduce Your Electricity Prices
As a homeowner specifically, you have the ability to save hundreds of dollars a year just by taking a few simple actions. Doing so consistently is a great way to pad your wallet a bit more and it’s a great way to give back to the environment. Every little bit a person can do to reduce their carbon footprint is adding to the sustainability of the planet.
Heating, Air Conditioning, and Ventilation
The most obvious example that comes to mind in terms of energy efficiency has to be air conditioning and heating. Depending on where you live in the country, you might be running your AC the majority of the year to help stay cool, and sometimes it needs to work overtime to deal with temperatures that creep into the triple digits. That being said, whether you’re dealing with the blistering heat of the desert or the brutal winters of the northeast, you can still take steps to lessen those costs.
Firstly, there is no need to heat or cool an empty house. Even though there is an appeal to coming back to a home that’s been heated or cooled to combat whatever weather is outside, you’re throwing away money if you’re not actually in the house. Along similar lines, make sure that all the windows and doors in your house are sealed so that excess heat/cool air doesn’t escape. Finally, on a fairly regular basis, ensure that you’re cleaning or replacing various air filters. If the filters become clogged, it means your HVAC system needs to work more to compensate, which costs more.
Large Appliances
In most homes, there are typically going to be a couple of big appliances that also eat up a lot of energy. While technology has made things like refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines more efficient, they still use up a lot of resources. One thing you can do to help reduce water consumption specifically is not run the washing machine or the dishwasher unless it’s a “full” load. This will help ensure energy efficiency along with better water use. Additionally, do some research and find out if your energy company has what’s known as ‘peak’ hours. Sometimes, within certain time frames, energy is consumed by more people which spikes rates. After certain hours, you might be able to run larger appliances at rates that are far less than they would be during the day.
