5 Appliances You Should Upgrade Now
There are many ways to save energy in most households, ranging from major infrastructural improvements to small habit changes that add up over a period of time. Upgrading your appliances is a strategy that might carry an initial cost, but eventually most energy-efficient product upgrades pay for themselves in energy savings.
If you’re looking for ways to save energy by upgrading your appliances, aim to replace your most inefficient appliances first. The usual culprits are:
- Heating and Cooling Equipment. Your furnace, air conditioner, and water heater are major energy hogs. Depending on how old your current equipment is, upgrading could save you money on your electricity bill immediately. Even after upgrading, be sure to perform regular maintenance to keep it running effectively.
- Refrigerator and Freezer. Your refrigerator/freezer has to stay extremely cold, even in warm winter months, and it takes a lot of energy to make that happen. Upgrade to a newer model for more efficient energy consumption.
- Washer. Your clothes washer uses a lot of electricity, especially if you use hot water, and water usage is also a concern for older models.
- Dryer. Upgrade your dryer to save significant amounts of electricity, or better yet—dry your clothes outside whenever you can!
- Television. LED-backed LCD televisions use only a fraction of the electricity of their bulkier counterparts. Get rid of your old TVs as soon as possible.
After replacing your appliances, you’ll still need to monitor and correct your regular energy consumption habits to maximize your savings and lower your electric bill.
