October is Energy Awareness Month
Ohioans are encouraged to take measures to increase the energy efficiency of their homes and businesses.
Here are some quick tips to make your home more energy efficient:
- Use a “smart” programmable thermostat. These devices allow you to control the temperature of your home even when you are out and about. This can prevent wasting energy heating or cooling your home when you are gone and therefore don’t need to.
- Perform routine maintenance on your heating or cooling units. Something as simple as cleaning out your air filters can make your heating and cooling units run more efficiently and save you money in electricity costs.
- Are you still using incandescent light bulbs? If so, try upgrading to compact fluorescent bulbs instead. These bulbs will make a huge impact on your energy bill. Fluorescent light bulbs are becoming standard in homes due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan.
- Going on vacation or a business trip? Take measures to make sure you aren’t wasting electricity while you are away from your home.
The Ohio Development Services Agency has programs designed to help businesses and communities take steps to become more energy efficient. Be sure to check out their website for more information about these programs.
Ohio’s Energy Awareness Month is part of National Energy Action Month, an initiative launched in 2011 by President Barack Obama that calls upon Americans to work together “to achieve greater energy security, a more robust economy, and a healthier environment for our children.”
