Energy Suppliers’ Sources of Green Energy
Where is Your Green Energy Coming From?
For centuries, coal and other fossil fuels have been utilized for daily human needs. There are records of early humans using wood and coal for cooking, for keeping warm, and keeping fires blazing to fend off predators. Over the years, our reliance on coal has grown, and evolved to include oil and other fossil fuels. This has become problematic as the population of people has steadily risen, and so has demand for once-harmless coal and oil. At the rate that fossil fuels are being used, Earth’s environment and fragile ecosystems have already been damaged, and in some cases, destroyed in short periods of time. The effects of using fossil fuels to the extent in which they are used has been known for years to actively contribute to fearsome signs of global warming, including, rising sea levels, acid rains, and devastating hurricanes. The push to switch to green energy is more important than ever, and it is always good to know from where your energy originates. Of the many sources, hydroelectric power is the most common, but there is a variety of ways that we have learned to create and sustain a flow of energy that will allow for us to go on using the devices that have made our lives easier.
Hydroelectric
Hydroelectric power is power generated from the flow of water, usually through the use of hydroelectric dams. Water flowing through the dams spin a generator, which then produces energy, using nothing more than the motion that naturally comes with a moving body of water.
Wind
The majesty of wind turbines can’t be missed. Shaped like enormous white pinwheels, wind turbines, like hydroelectric dams, are attached to generators that collect power from the rotation of the massive blades. While wind power is beautifully renewable, the upfront costs can be isolating to many people, costing around, even over, $50,000.
Solar
Solar energy is the most popular type of renewable energy. The distinctive solar panels that top the roofs of homes and businesses, providing low-cost alternatives to relying solely on the electric grid. Stigmatized for years because of their awkward appearance, solar panels used to be as expensive as they were unwelcome by various homeowners’ associations. Though first-generation solar panels were considered an eyesore, they outperformed expectations, and continue to do so. Newer solar panels are thinner and more versatile than solar panels of the past, and the stigma surrounding solar panels is slowly, but surely, diminishing.
Geothermal
Geothermal energy is heat generated by the interior of planet Earth. Geothermal energy, though a positive and eco-friendly alternative, is limited in use and application. It is used primarily to heat buildings, water, spas, and greenhouses. Geothermal heat certainly has potential, but the difficulty of getting to it makes it an difficult option to harness.
